Amur falcon has many migration sites and roosting areas around Doyang and Pangti areas.
The Amur Falcon breeds in south-eastern Siberia and Northern China, wintering in Southern Africa. It is listed in the IUCN list of threatened species.
Doyang is one of the biggest roosting sites in Nagaland. Nagaland is one of India’s largest roosting ground for Amur falcons falls in the birds’ migration route from Siberia to Africa. About 12000 to 14000 falcons were killed during the peak migration. The Forest department conducted a signature campaign, and a marathon to save Amur Falcon in Pangti.
The Forest Department assisted by Natural Nagas, an NGO and WTI conducted various activities in Nagaland to spread awareness about the need to conserve the species that resulted in signing of an MoU to ban the killing of falcons.
India, as a signatory to the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and is therefore duty bound to provide safe passage and ensure conservation of migratory species.
