The scientific evidence behind climate change is too compelling to ignore. Average global temperature has increased, global sea level has risen as a result of the polar ice caps melting, extreme weather events worldwide have become more intensified and long-term, the amount of CO2 have increased and it all have come to threaten planet earth including its inhabitants.
And now the 45th President of the United State, a country that plays a major role in the global fight against climate change, has turned out to be a climate denier.
Donald Trump, who claims climate change, is “a concept invented by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive”, could become the undoing of the progress made in the mitigation of climate change, which has been in 40 years in the making.
In his 100-day action plan, he informs the world of his agenda to cancel billions of funds to UN climate change programs, revive energy infrastructure projects like the Keystone Pipeline and invest $50 trillion dollars’ worth of money in mining shale, oil, natural gas and coal in the US.
He has also made statements about pulling the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement, a treaty that aims to bring all countries to corporate in reducing green gas emissions and cancelling president Obama’s Climate Action Plan.
According to research, if Trump follows through with his policies, it would leave emissions 16% higher (3.4 billion tonnes more US carbon emissions). While the US already contributes 25% of total emission on the planet, Trump’s plan to increase fossil fuel production will further aggravate the condition.
If he withdraws the US from the Paris Climate Agreement, it would cause the treaty to lose momentum, discouraging its signatories to do their part in mitigating climate change. Reviving energy infrastructure projects in the US will increase air pollution and damage fragile ecosystems and the negative impact this would cause could be irreversible.
In a time when the world needs to take drastic measures to mitigate climate change, Trump’s policies could be the ultimate barrier to making any progress at all.
