Green Clean Guide wishes our readers a very green World Forestry Day, 2014

March 21st the autumnal equinox in the Southern Hemisphere, and the vernal equinox in the Northern, was chosen as the day which is now celebrated as World Forestry Day. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21st March the International Day of Forests.

Forests cover approximately one third of the total land on our planet and play a major role in stabilising the climate. Many of the negative effects of global warming can be countered by simply taking care of the world forest resources.

India is concerned about the depleting forest cover due to rapid developmental activities. The National Mission for a Green India is one of the eight Missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) launched by Government of India in year 2008 to increase forest cover in the country. Read more on India’s forest cover from here.

Recently (In year 2014), Government of India has included National Mission for a Green India, popularly known as Green India Mission (GIM) under Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS).  Any scheme under CSS receives due attention and designated funds for the implementation. Read more here.

On the occasion of World Forestry Day 2014, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has given following message-

“As we deliberate on the post-2015 development agenda, let us acknowledge the vital role of forests and pledge to work together to protect and sustainably manage these vital ecosystems.”
