Energy efficiency has gained from regulatory initiatives as well as cost saving efforts by industrial and commercial consumers. Other major drivers include pressure to achieve publicly stated emission reduction goals, pressure from large customers like Wal-Mart and demand side management initiatives by utilities.

Equipment makers are introducing smarter, more efficient appliances, lighting and energy management systems. At the same time, large consumers are increasingly following progressive standards like Green Building codes and LEED certification. 2013 also saw the introduction of Deep Energy Retrofits i.e.  analyses of building as well as construction process that achieve much larger energy cost savings compared to simpler energy retrofits.
