Infographic: Home Lighting Usage and Behaviour

90% of the UK populations say that someone in their homes forgets to turn the lights off when they are leaving a room. People accept that the major waste of electrical energy in the household is lights left on in a vacant room. Children are hold responsible most of the times for leaving lights on in household with kids under 18 years, but spouses and significant others are hold responsible in these houses, too.

Mothers are nearly 1 1\2 times as likely as fathers to blame their kids for leaving the lights on. 44% people consider it most advantageous for lights to automatically turn ON/OFF when entering and leaving the bathroom. In the UK average household power utilization is about 5700 kWh each year. The administration is investing a lot of funds in educating people about their energy uses in the home and many people are now taking steps towards becoming more energy efficient.

Here are some of the steps which can be taken to save electricity in households:

  1. Turn lights off when not in a room. Ask family members to do the same.
  2. Use energy efficient light bulbs like LEDs.
  3. Turn all electrical appliances off when not in use.
  4. Remove chargers and PC peripherals from plug sockets to save energy.
  5. Reduce hot water thermostat to 60 degrees.
  6. Reduce space heating thermostat to below 21 degrees depending on your requirements.
  7. Only switch heating and lighting when you are at home.
  8. Only boil the water you need in the kettle.
  9. Keep your fridge and freezer doors shut as much as possible. Don’t leave them opened.
  10. Dry clothes outside.
