Suzlon signs agreement for 98.7 MW wind turbines

Suzlon Group which is the world’s fifth largest wind turbine manufacturer has signed contracts for supplying wind turbines to PowerWorks USA. This would represent 98.7 MW of power. The contract has been won by the US-based Suzlon subsidiary, SWECO (Suzlon Wind Energy Corp).

As per the agreement, Suzlon is to provide 29 units of S97 2.1 MW wind turbines and 17 units of first S111 2.1 MW wind turbines for projects in California and Illinois, including the Panther Creek wind project and run operations for two years.

“S111 is the most efficient turbine model and the blade profile had an optimum pressure coefficient distribution ideal for lower wind sites, in a variety of climates, including those at higher altitudes,” said Duncan Koerbel, CEO, SWECO.

The S111 turbine was developed in close partnership with the Dutch National Aerospace Laboratory. “The tunnel instrumentation utilizes finite accuracy to measure air flow wakes and boundary layers that ensure dependable test results which translate into dependable performance.”

The S111 blade profile has an optimum pressure coefficient distribution ideal for low wind sites in a variety of climates, including those at higher altitudes and it is less noisy which is a boon for heavily populated areas. With a rated wind speed of 11m/s, it provides a power of 2100 kW.

Suzlon was also in news for having won contracts totalling 370 MW during the Q4 of FY 2013-14 in a range of locations including Germany, UK, India, Belgium.

Suzlon Energy Ltd., the Indian arm of Suzlon had commenced operations in India in 1995 and has a cumulative installed base (as on December 2012) of more than 7600 MW across 8 states in India.
