Electric Vehicles – Toward Clean Cities

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are making a comeback, supported by persistent efforts by car makers to reduce upfront costs as well as to create supporting infrastructure. While they are no substitute for mass transport, electric vehicles hold a promise to make cities cleaner.

EV sales grew 300% up to November 2013 fuelled by popular models like Nissan Leaf and Tesla S. Major brands like BMW and Volkswagen have announced launches of new models in addition to existing offerings from Ford, Toyota and Chevrolet.

EVs are also emerging as a clean, distributed source of peak power by tying up to the grid. Nissan’s ‘Vehicle-To-Building ‘technology enables companies to regulate electricity by tapping into EV’s plugged into their parking areas. The EVs are charges in times of low load while they feed in electricity when demand is higher.
