Job Title: The World Bank, Senior Social Scientist (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene)

The Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) in South Asia is recruiting a Senior Social Scientist to contribute to WSP’s program on water, sanitation and hygiene issues. This will be a local appointment with a 2-year, renewable term position based in New Delhi, reporting to the WSP South Asia Regional Team Leader.

Job Description:

Advise WSP colleagues in determining the effectiveness and use of communication materials intended to change behaviors (ranging from advocacy papers presented to senior government officials to public health awareness campaigns in villages).

Responsibilities are expected to include the development and implementation of experiments in the field with regards to the process of decision making which will serve to inform the design of technical assistance and communication programs for implementation in South Asia and beyond.

Sharing ideas with colleagues across units within the World Bank and across regions will be an important part of the role, as will participating in training activities to help WSP colleagues appreciate the nuances of decision making and how to modify products and approaches accordingly.

Eligibility:

  1. Advanced degree (at least Masters level) in behavioral science, psychology, sociology, public health or similar field; demonstrated strong technical knowledge and analytical skills.
  2. Experience in applied policy in the areas of poverty and institutional governance issues related to the water sector or public health in general.
  3. Minimum of eight years of relevant experience with strong analytical and quantitative skills, methodological rigor and demonstrated problem-solving ability.
  4. Demonstrated expertise in behavioral economics, social psychology, the psychology of judgment and decision making.
  5. Experience in developing and experimentally testing applications of principles of behavioral science, ideally in developing-country field settings.
  6. Networks across multiple disciplines – design, behavior change, academia, management, marketing etc.
  7. Experience of user centered & ethnographic research, behavior change games and the creation of appropriate user personas
  8. Demonstrated experience in coordinating and conceptualizing complex projects and processes, conducting policy dialogue and providing technical advisory services, and producing reports or studies.
  9. Strong client orientation and demonstrated strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work in sensitive situations and challenging policy environments with commitment to results on the ground.
  10. Demonstrated project management skills to function effectively in multi-disciplinary teams within a matrix management environment; general knowledge of World Bank policies and operational programs would be a plus. Appropriate level of information technology skills.
