Post Doc Position in Environmental Nanotechnology and Oil Weathering

Title:Post Doc Position in Environmental Nanotechnology and Oil Weathering

Location:Auburn University, USA

Organization’s profile:

.Auburn University was established in 1856. Today, Auburn is one of the few universities to carry the torch as a land, sea and space grant university.

Job Description:

Work on Environmental nanotechnologies and dispersant/oil/sediment interactions and effects of dispersants on weathering of oil. The nanotechnology research involves preparation, characterization and testing of novel nanomaterials for environmental cleanup uses (e.g., in situ remediation of soil and groundwater, degradation of persistent contaminants, environmental catalysis). The oil research focuses on dispersant effects on transformation and transport of persistent oil components in the marine environment. The candidate is expected to play a leadership role in carrying out batch and column experiments, analyzing and interpreting experimental data, and publishing the results in high-quality peer-reviewed journals. Solid knowledge and instrumental skills are required in physical and chemical characterization of nanoparticles, organic oxidation chemistry (especially, photochemical reactions and ozone-facilitated oil oxidation chemistry) and in molecular analyses of oil-sediment interactions.

Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science and engineering, or other related disciplines; demonstrated knowledge and experience in environmental nanotechnologies, redox-chemistry including experience in GC-MS/MS and microscopic and spectroscopic methods (e.g., HRTEM, AFM, Fluorescence Spectroscopy) for molecular-level characterization of oil/dispersants on sediment and for identifying oil weathering pathways and mechanisms; working knowledge and experience in conducting experiments on testing of nanoparticles, sorption/desorption and oxidation of organic pollutants in seawater and sediment including uses of related analytical instruments (e.g., GC/MS, HPLC); and excellent organizational and English writing skills.
